A Ukrainian beer raising money for Ukrainian weapons.

Release party: Saturday May 7

The day Russia invaded Ukraine, Pravda Brewery in the city of Lviv stopped making beer – and started making Molotov cocktails…

Then the owners posted their beer recipes on the internet and begged other craft breweries around the world: Brew one to raise money and awareness. We took up that challenge, with two differences…

Awareness: We partnered with leaders from the nation’s largest journalism organization to honor the seven (and sadly counting) journalists slain while covering this awful war.

Money: While humanitarian aid flows into the country, we’re sending proceeds back to Pravda so they can make more Molotov cocktails – or any other weapons they want to make or buy. If you kill the people killing you, you don’t need food and bandages. (So far, Pravda has told us they’ve used similar donations to pay for drones, med packs, rifle scopes, and tactical gear.)

Brewing a Ukrainian beer in South Florida…

The Beer For Bombs “brew day” was April 6, 2022, in Pompano Beach, Florida.

That’s the home of the 26 Degree Brewing Company. At 5 o’clock that morning, they combined the ingredients and started the brewing process – which will take three weeks to ferment.

Above is SPJ Florida director Joe Pye checking the results. Pye’s hobby is running the craft-brewing news site Broward Beer. Here’s what he says about the Pravda recipe currently fermenting in the stainless steel tanks…

Beer for Bombs is based on Pravda Brewery’s Ukrainian Imperial Stout. It’s an intensely dark, complex stout ale, with rich dark malty flavor and notes of roastiness, chocolate, and coffee. The finish is both sweet and dry with a full-bodied, velvety smooth mouthfeel. We expect it to have an alcohol content of around 9.5%.

Even if you don’t drink, you probably wear clothes. Here’s how to order a Beer For Bombs T-shirt, with proceeds going back to Pravda Brewery.
